None that I am aware of outside of eventual hardware limitations.  
There are groups using nagios to check 10's of thousands of services,  
known from discussions on this list and http://www.nagios.org/userprofiles/ 
. Distributed checks can help a lot with scalability when hardware  
does start to become an issue.
