basic nagios/linux info needed

Hello all, I am attempting to install nagios on a new server...I wanted to use nag-3.0.6 but there is no rpm for it and I have been frustrated trying to use rpmbuild 
to create what I need, so since its a new server (or relatively blank) I tried this:
Based on this info below 1. is it a problem unable to send message to package kit?
2. What does yum actually do? Does it install nagios so that I don't have to compile binaries, etc?
