Thanks Mathieu and Jon, that package did the trick.
Btw, can I just manually move one file (check_http) to the libexec dir after 'make' or does 'make install' do more than that?

Try installing libssl-dev:
apt-get install libssl-dev
And compile with:
--with-openssl
Working fine for me with Debian.
