Dynmically Adding Hosts and Retain State Information

Hi,
I would like the ability to dynamically add hosts. I have Developers
who have written APIs to send passive service checks to Nagios, however
due to the size of our infrastructure I cannot add every host. The only
way I know how to do this is parse nagios.log for " Passive check result
was received for service '$service' on host '$host', but the host could
not be found!" messages.
The problem that I have is that I would also like to keep the ability
for some services to NOT retain state information during specific
restarts.
The only way I can see to add dynamic hosts is to make sure retain state
is enabled globally, add the cfg, then do a reload of nagios. If I have
some "retain_status_information 0" settings then I will loose state
throughout the day.
Is there anyway to force a reload AND keep state, regardless of
settings? Anyone have a workaround for this problem?
Thanks!
