Availability Reports From Database

I can't believe I'm the first person to ask this, but I can't find anything on Google...

I have a number of monthly reports that need to be generatesd and using the cgi's is just taking too long. It seems to me to make more sense to pull this info straight from the NDO database. Has anyone tried doing this?
