It sounds like he may have Apache logging directed to a MySQL database.

You posted a MySQL error. The error you should be seeing will be in the apache logs. I'm kind of confused.

I am over the first hurdle, changing the pernissions to +rx fixed it, and nagios now gives me a signon panel, however, as I explained, it does not accept the nagiosadmin username.
This is the messages I am getting:

if you remove the .htaccess auth parts, can you get in and view the
CGI's normally?
what do your Apache error and access logs say?
