That's the question only you can answer. Do you have some special/unique Apache authentication module installed and enabled for your web server that is overriding the standard mod_auth module? mod_auth_mysql maybe? Default apache authentication uses text files, not MySQL. You've installed something special/unusual/unique/non-default. What is it?
