is probably overkill for your situation but you could use Splunk</span></p>

watch event logs (and other logs) via saved searches and then</span></p>

it notify Nagios when it spots something. We do this here as</span></p>
<p class="MsoPlainText"><span style="font-size: 10pt; font-family: "Arial","sans-serif";">Splunk
just has more smarts about dealing with events/logs/matches</span></p>
<p class="MsoPlainText"><span style="font-size: 10pt; font-family: "Arial","sans-serif";">within
certain time windows. But as I say, it IS more overhead than</span></p>
<p class="MsoPlainText"><span style="font-size: 10pt; font-family: "Arial","sans-serif";">the
other solutions you cite.</span></p>
