I solved this by downloading the check_smtp.c from the CVS and recompiling.
works like a champ now.

Subject: [Nagios-users] check_smtp says OK and timeout - but telnet to
port 25 works ?
Hi!
When checking against a Microsoft Exchange server, that is located bwhind a
firewall, I get timeout..
Trying from the shell-prompt I do:
# ./check_smtp -H 80.199.yyy.xxx -w 20 -c 30 -t 20 -v
SMTP OK - 0 sec. response time, 220 domain-sbs.domain Microsoft ESMTP MAIL
Service, Version: 5.0.2195.5329 ready at Sun, 24 Nov 2002 21:57:21 +0100
Socket timeout after 20 seconds
It says OK - and then timeout ??
With telnet I get:
# telnet 80.199.yyy.xxx 25
Trying 80.199.yyy.xxx...
Connected to 80.199.yyy.xxx.
Escape character is '^]'.
220 domain-sbs.domain Microsoft ESMTP MAIL Service, Version: 5.0.2195.5329
ready at Sun, 24 Nov 2002 22:00:02 +0100
helo ff
250 domain-sbs.domain Hello [195.184.zzz.qqq]
quit
221 2.0.0 domain-sbs.domain Service closing transmission channel
Connection closed by foreign host.
Any ideas ??
/Brian
