can nagios discover active IPs in LAN environment ?

Hello list,

There is always the option to ping an IP to detect if it is up or not.
But Is there any script which can be used with nagios to *Discover* the
active IPs with in a LAN ?  If the IPs then connected with user names we
can see who are there.

Any clue ?
