Upgrading questions

Currently running v1.2 on a Mandrake 9.2 box and quickly learning Nagios.
The company I work has an increased demand for monitoring services.  Has
anyone worked out good hardware specs for a box to run this?  I'm going to
be monitoring over a thousand hosts across a nation wide WAN.

Additionally I've had a problem adding hosts to my database.  When adding
hosts I would like to be able to add services by just selecting a service
group.  On the line that says service group there is no drop down nor manual
entry field.  Any ideas on how I get that field to be live or another way I
can add a service group to a host?
