Stale log messages!

I am totally confused about these error messages:

*May 14 18:02:16 blue nagios: Warning: The results of host 'backup' are
stale by 45 seconds (threshold=15 seconds).  I'm forcing an immediate check
of the host.

*I am getting a ton of these messages and I don't know why.  I looked at the
archives and google and nothing seems to help.*
